Announcing the BC Review interview series

Vancouver writer Trevor Marc Hughes

In November 2022, at the most recent board meeting of the Ormsby Literary Society, the chair, Byron Sheardown, suggested that we open a YouTube channel and start an interview series. Board member Trevor Marc Hughes jumped at the suggestion. “I’ve got filmmaking experience,” he said, “worked on CBC’s Arts Report years ago & could help,” according to the Minutes of that meeting.

Over the next month or two Trevor opened a YouTube page for the BC Review and drew up a short list of people to interview. After seven years of book reviews it was hard to know where to start, but Trevor brought a fresh eye, ten years’ experience as an arts reporter for CBC Radio Vancouver, and a deep curiosity and passion for learning more about BC arts, writing, scholarship, and culture.

Trevor kicked off the series by interviewing historian Robin Fisher in Nanaimo on January 14. We added a link on our site on February 25. The channel is now open and views are increasing steadily.

Therefore we are delighted to launch our new interview series at the BC Review, hosted and curated by Trevor Marc Hughes. Please go directly to the YouTube channel here for recent interviews with Richard Mackie, Vickie Jensen & Phil Nuytten, and Angus McIntyre, with upcoming interviews with Catherine Nolin and Sage Birchwater, and stay tuned for future instalments — Richard Mackie

  1. This is a very good idea, employing Utube to share knowledge, culture and traditions in our multicultural society/community. Although many Canadians love to consume Chinese food and to visit many Chinatowns in our country, but not many have learned about the history of the Chinese Canadian immigrations and settlements, their cultures and traditions in Canada where they call home!
