Craig Taylor – The social history

Craig Taylor interview segment
Produced by Trevor Marc Hughes

*

Considering author and journalist Craig Taylor has had such cosmopolitan addresses as London and New York, and such impressive credentials, such as writing for The Guardian, finding him on the quiet shores of Protection Island just off of Nanaimo is surprising. But, as he points out, living in a place where he is known by others and where he can enjoy outdoor pursuits, such as taking a swim in the ocean, and walking the beaches barefoot, is where he is most comfortable. However, he spent years interviewing the people of London and New York for two critically acclaimed books, as well as writing a follow-up book of a British classic in oral history, Ronald Blythe’s Akenfield, and now seems quite at home in the surroundings of the island he calls home, with fellow authors Liz Hammond-Kaarrema and Nancy and Robert Turner as his neighbours.

In and around that time he worked as a researcher and associate producer on documentary and current affairs programs that aired on Knowledge Network, The Discovery Channel, and Discovery Health, and were produced by Transatlantic Films, the UK’s oldest independent film production company. His own documentary projects include The Young Hustler, a film he produced and directed, about his grandfather’s days operating a Fraser River tugboat during The Great Depression. He has recently uploaded his interviews with Liz Hammond-Kaarremaa, Nancy J. Turner, Wiley Wei-Chiun Ho, Catherine Clement, Graeme Menzies, and Henry Yu.
